HELPING OTHERS THROUGH KINDNESS

A few years ago, I read an article that changed the way I think about kindness and grief.
It was about a hardworking waitress who was rushing between tables, doing her best to keep up. Even though she was exhausted, she still took time to talk with a customer. During their chat, she mentioned that she was studying at college to build a better future for herself. She was working every spare hour just to afford the fees.
The customer listened and then quietly offered to pay for her college tuition. The only thing he asked in return was this:
“When you become successful, help someone else improve their future too.”

He told her that he had lost his son, and that he now tried to honour his son’s memory by helping others.
This simple act of kindness stayed with me. It sparked something in me — a reminder that even in our deepest pain, we can still create light for others.
I later reached out to the man from the story, and we talked about his experience. He told me how, during a hurricane season, he and his friend were putting up storm shutters while his son played nearby. When he turned around, he saw his little boy face down in the pool.

That moment changed everything. But instead of letting grief consume him, he found a new purpose — spreading kindness in his son’s name.
He printed cards explaining his story and began doing random acts of kindness. Sometimes, he would pay for the meal of the person behind him at a drive-through. Often, that kindness would continue — one person paying it forward to another — sometimes all day long.
Knowing that people all around the world, even through pain and loss, find strength to help others is incredibly powerful. Sometimes, all it takes to change a life is a moment — a smile, a kind word, or simply asking a stranger, “Are you okay?”
